“she’s independent and beautiful
wish i could be like her
she’s got the girls and the boys
so wrapped around her finger
rumor is, she’s some kind of dream
nobody knows she cries herself to sleep

we are not that different from each other
we just want somebody to discover
who we really are when we drop our guard
that love has gotta start with you and me
we

he’s on the top of the social scene
he’s stylish, cool and clever
he’s gotta cool attitude that screams
he’s got it all together
you’d think he’s addicted to himself
but he wishes he could be someone else

gotta come together
you know you’ll never ever have to be alone
you got a hand to hold

we..
we gotta come together..”

~ “we”.. by joy williams

These words struck something in my heart recently.. just thinking about how realness draws people in. Everybody in the world is searching for something, and it is often hidden..

What they are searching for is hidden in the sense that so many people tend to put on a facade and do their best to hide away from the world. Maybe they feel rejected by the rest of the world’s population. Maybe they’re scared to let someone see inside their heart. Maybe they are aching for a hug or even just a smile.

Maybe that something they are searching for is hidden in that it is hidden from those who are searching. Rather than hidden by them. And maybe this is somewhat of an abstract thought. But do you think that, as Christians, we sometimes hide the love that others are craving?

The world is so in need of God’s love, and if we don’t take the initiative to show them that love.. then who will?

“Therefore, be imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father]. And walk in love, [esteeming and delighting in one another] as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us, a slain offering and sacrifice to God [for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance.” [Ephesians 5:1-2, Amplified Bible]

We’re called to be imitators of God. What does that mean exactly?.. [I so love the description given in the Amplified Bible.. which is why it is the translation I chose to quote above.] To imitate God means we are supposed to copy Him. To follow His example.

How often do I really copy Jesus? How often do I delight in others and put their needs and desires ahead of my own?

I have this theory that if we all would just take some time to go out of our way to show love — real love — to the world.. just maybe we would not have all the false fronts. If we lived out the love that God has lived out toward us.. others would be drawn in and feel at home with us.. feel like they have a friend, when they haven’t felt like that in years.. or maybe even ever.

Just think of the changes we can bring about, if only we will take the initiative. We have to take the step from planning to action at some point. Because planning to love someone doesn’t get ya anywhere. It takes action to really make a difference.

Like that quote by.. who was it?.. Gandi, I think it was, said we’ve got to “be the change [we] want to see in the world.” We cannot expect the world to change if we are not willing to change in our own hearts and our own actions.

So go on..

Love someone. Really love them. Today. And just see what happens.
