Judges 6-7

Gideon was so unsure.. so timid, it seems. He asked repeatedly for reassurance and signs that this was a God thing. …”If it’s really You, give me a sign..” He seemed like “Um.. are ya sure? You can’t mean me..” He protested so much..

And when God told him to tear down the Baal and Asherah junk and build an altar to Him instead.. Gideon did it. But he did it at night because he was afraid of his family and his town.

I guess what really struck me with all of Gideon’s uncertainty and asking for confirmation on everything.. multiple times.. is the fact that God has something great for each of us to do. He has a specially perfected spot just for us to fulfill the plans He’s made. We each have obstacles to overcome.. and so much I find that we doubt and question and ask for confirmation and signs just as much as — if not more than — Gideon did.

If some circumstance doesn’t match up exactly with the way we imagined or life takes an unexpected turn, it’s so easy to say.. “prove it to me, God.. just one more time.. please”..

And when He brings us to an opportunity that we think is too great for us.. we, just like Gideon, so often say, “You can’t really mean me.”

But He does.

Why is it so hard to believe that God loves to use everyday people to go out and change everyday life?

The Midianites were so afraid of Gideon and his tiny army.. because they knew that God was with Gideon. They knew all the stories of what God had done for Israel previous to that. And so they were afraid.

Gideon didn’t have to fight. God took care of it all. He won their battle for them. And He wants us to remember that. He will do the same for us. He wants to change the world.. and use us to do it.

Imagine, though, if Gideon hadn’t listened, even after all the signs. Where would Israel have been then? I love this quote.. “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke

Gideon had to do something.. even if it was as seemingly small to him as trusting God and believing His promises. We’ve got to do the same.

Take advantage of the opportunities God gives you so that evil cannot triumph.
